Demon Lords

Demon lord

Each demon lord has a unique appearance and set of abilities. Most control at least one layer of the Abyss. A demon lord, when slain in a plane other than the Abyss, is banished to the Abyss for 100 years, whereas “ordinary” demons, including the mightiest balors and mariliths, risk being reborn into a lesser form (or not at all). According to the Black Scrolls of Ahm, a demon lord slain on its home layer is destroyed forever, although the Demonomicon of Iggwilv argues that the Abyss itself can respawn a supposedly destroyed demon lord for reasons that are unfathomable.

The most powerful demon lords are demon princes. “Demon lord” and “demon prince” are self-proclaimed titles; unlike the archdevils, the chaotic evil demon lords do not have a rigid hierarchy. However, first edition AD&D did claim a demon can only be called a prince if he or she rules an entire plane of the Abyss, thus Orcus implied by his title to rule a least one plane of existence, while lesser lords did not.

Demon lords wage eternal war with each other, often seeking ways to expand their holdings into other layers and at the same time defend their personal domains from rival lords and scheming underlings. Demogorgon has for many years been the most powerful demon lord, and he proclaims himself Prince of Demons. Orcus and Graz’zt contest his title, as does the obyrith Obox-ob, who once held that title.

Most demon lords have secretive mortal cults who seek to elevate their lords to godhood through prayer and sacrifice. The relationship between clerics and demon lords deserves special mention. Although demon lords are not true deities, their power is so great that some mortal beings worship them as gods. Because of this godlike status, demon lords sometimes act as patrons for clerics who devote themselves to the Abyss. Demon lords cannot grant spells, but the Abyss itself can, using the demon lords as conduits. Clerics in the service of demon lords gain access to domains, just as other clerics who devote themselves to ideals do, but some of their domains are unique to worshipers of the lords of the Abyss.

There are three known subtypes of demon:

Obyrith

The obyriths are so ancient that they predate mortal life, and even the gods. They rarely have a humanoid shape, and some say that just looking at an obyrith can drive a mortal insane. Their great age and apparent ability to instill insanity at a glance are strong hints at some relation with the Great Old Ones created by H. P. Lovecraft. A few types of remaining obyriths are draudnu, ekolids, laghathti, sibriexes, & uzollru. Some obyrith lords have evolved over time to take on more recognizable shapes, such as Pazuzu or Pale Night. Other known obyrith demon lords include Obox-ob, Dagon, the Queen of Chaos, the Malgoth, Ugudenk, Bechard, Vroth-Khun, Ubothar, and Cabiri (imprisoned in the Wells of Darkness). Asima and numerous other obyrith lords whose names were lost to time have been destroyed, either slain by each other, or slaughtered by the Tanar’ri. Several others were slain by the Queen of Chaos for refusing to join her army when she attempted genocide against the Wind Dukes of Aaqa.

Ekolid: Ekolids belong to the ancient race of demon called obyrith. Being obyriths, ekolids have monstrous forms, which can drive mad anyone who dares look at them. At first, they resemble the union of an ant, a scorpion and a spider, but their real fiendish shape cannot be compared to any other creature. Ekolids are driven by the need to reproduce. During any battle, using their supernatural speed, they constantly try to implant eggs in their enemies. Ekolids are rarely found in groups, except on Zionyn (663rd layer of the Abyss), where they live at the service of Obox-ob.

Tanar’ri

The tanar’ri are a race of numerous demons originally created by the obyriths as slaves. The tanar’ri eventually revolted against the obyriths, killing most of them, and taking over as the dominant race of demons in the Abyss. Most known demon lords are tanar’ri, with the exceptions being listed above.

The tanar’ri are essentially “classic” demons; reflections of cruelty, evil and sin. Although there are several exceptions, they usually have a basic humanoid form.

There are many known types of tanar’ri, including: Adaru, alkilith, alu-fiend, anzu, armanite, arrow demon, babau, balor, bar-lgura, bulezau, cambion, cerebrilith, chasme, dretch, gadacro, glabrezu, goristro, hezrou, jarilith, jovoc, kastighur, kelvezu, klurichir, mane, marilith, maurezhi, molydeus, myrmyxicus, nabassu, nalfeshnee, orlath, palrethee, rutterkin, skurchur, solamith, sorrowsworn, succubus, turagathshnee, uridezu, vathugu, vrock, and yochlol.

Armanite: Armanites compose the heavy cavalry of the army of The Abyss. They resemble fiendish centaurs covered by a full plate armor. They are fierce enemies in battle and their charges are deeply feared. On the layers of the Abyss they usually wander in groups guided by a chief called knecht or pathwarden. Because of their unusual discipline, they are often employed by powerful abyssal lords as mercenaries. Most of armanites come from the Plains of Gallenshu (377th layer of the Abyss); on this layer there are 24 cities of armanites, each ruled by an armanite called konsul.

Loumara

The loumara are a relatively new demonic race, much younger than the tanar’ri. They are still centuries old, but this is still recent in a place like the Abyss, where time doesn’t mean the same thing it does on the Material Plane. As a result, no loumara has become powerful enough to be recognized as a demon lord.

Loumara are usually immaterial or invisible demons that are more like ghosts or undead than demons. All loumara can possess living creatures.

Known types of loumara include:

A Dybbuk resembles a jellyfish with a simply sketched human face. Dybbuks are incorporeal creatures and so they do not have a specific physical form. Dybbuks can possess and control dead bodies, so they spend a lot of time looking for a ‘perfect’ host body to animate – one that died without violence or major injury, and preferably one that is handsome or beautiful. After taking the control of a ‘perfect’ body, dybbuks try to insert themselves into the society of the victim, plunging into depravity and hedonism until their possessed body is broken down and ruined. When a ‘perfect’ body is not available, a dybbuk will take a less desirable body and continue to search for a better host. Dybbuks are lonely creatures, and can be found in groups only where there are many corpses to possess, such as on a recent battlefield. They tend to avoid undead, because already-animated bodies are of no use to them.

A Guecubu resembles a mass of vapor, and is born from dreamstuff tainted by evil. Guecubus can possess and control the body of sleeping humanoids. Once they are in control, they ‘ride’ silently, letting their victim go about his or her business. At some point they take control and lash out, trying to spread death and murder – particularly on the victim’s family and friends. Sometimes the guecubu will conceal its actions even from the victim, letting them believe that they are cursed or jinxed.

Guecubus believe that killings form some sort of pattern, and enough spilled blood will eventually reveal the meaning of creation in this pattern. They rarely form groups with other guecubus, preferring to remain hidden and anonymous. However, many of them can be found in the Dreaming Gulf (230th layer of the Abyss), where they are created spontaneously from the raw, churning chaos of dreams.

SIX TRUTHS ABOUT DEMONS

While all demons are different, with their own goals, strategies, and powers, a few characteristics are common to almost all of these Abyssal fiends.

  • Demons are very intelligent. With few exceptions (the dretch being first and foremost), most demons have better than average Intelligence and Wisdom scores, not to mention impressive
    Charisma scores.
  • Demons have more abilities than they need. Most fiends have more supernatural and special abilities than they will use in a typical combat, and many of these abilities are “at will.”
For example, a marilith that doesn’t spend six seconds every so often using magic weapon on its longswords deserves what it gets when the adventurers pop out from behind the tapestry.
  • Where there’s one demon, there’s usually more. Yes, demons are chaotic and selfish, but they do have social skills . . . of a sort. If a lone hezrou finds itself stuck on the Material Plane, it can always summon help from home. Demons (particularly non-tanar’ri) that can’t summon other fiends are usually more pack-oriented or work with nondemons. True, the lone quasit might flit about a dungeon looking for trouble, but it probably knows where to run if adventurers catch it at its mischief.
  • Running away is not only smart, it can also be fun. Demons love bloodshed, but they also revel in pain and suffering. Fiends often have many ways of escaping encounters that become too dangerous. In fact, it’s a wonder that nalfeshnee even have feet, what with their greater teleport ability. On occasion, fiends can also see greater profit (or at least, more amusement) in leaving a fight while the outcome is still in doubt. Don’t worry; they will
    usually return, though.
  • Demons are “odd job” specialists. Few demons are onetrick ponies. Nearly all have a variety of skills and enough evil cunning to allow them to exploit any situation to their advantage. Unreliable servant, disloyal henchman, whim-driven master—a demon can fulfill all these roles, sometimes at the same time.
  • The Abyss calls to them. First and foremost, demons exist to spread chaos and evil—the nature of the Abyss. If demons expect to be on the Material Plane for long, they will often either find places reminiscent of their chaotic homes or create them. Fiends like to open portals to the Abyss—not only for reinforcements, but to expand the influence of chaos and evil throughout the planes.

Reading the Entries

Title or Position – self-explanatory, however important to note if interacting with a Demon lord addressing them by his or her proper title is important.

Alignments – Alignments have been abbreviated due to space considerations. (you all should know these). Nearly every Demon is Chaotic Evil

Concerns – This is similar to but should not be confused with a Deities Portfolio. A Concern is the subject that a Demon Lord is most likely to become actively invloved in.

Domains – are listed in alphabetical order, Sub-Domains are listed in domain order. You will notice that some Domains listed in the Domain column are not currently in the Pathfinder game; these are hold over Domains from D&D 3.5. I included these because I believe that eventually these Domains will be up-graded to Pathfinder. If for some reason a 3.5 D&D Domain listed in the Domain column is now actually a Pathfinder Sub-Domain but is not in the Sub-Domain column, it may be added the Sub-Domain list.

To view more information on the Domains please go to: Pathfinder Domains

Weapon – Only the most Powerful of Demon Lords have a Favored Weapon.

Unholy Symbol – Only the most Powerful of Demon Lords have their own Holy Symbol.

Layer of the Abyss – There are 666 layers in the Abyss, the Lair indicated is the Layer(s) that the Demon lord has dominion over or resides on.

The majority of these demon lords below appear as listed in Appendix I in Fiendish Codex I: Hordes of the Abyss. (f) indicates a female demon lord, (o) indicates an obyrith, (l) indicates a loumara, and (d) indicates a lord that is presumed dead.

Almost all of the Demons Below are linked to their own Greyhawk wiki-page but because of the stupid fucking OP Reforge, you can’t tell because it bolded every fucking thing.
