Varrick grew up as the son of a farmer who, having become bored with rural life, was recruited to serve a band of hunters known as the Songwriters, who fancied themselves destined to great memory in bardic lore. After doing years of service, he eventually joined their ranks and watched several of his comrades fall prey to giants as the group journeyed through mountains seeking to gain fame, power, and influence by confronting and defeating an ancient dragon. Although his party eventually defeated many younger dragons, they were eventually stormed by a group of giants and forced into submission. Varrick escaped, recovered some of his loot, killed the giant chieftain in his sleep, and then found his way back to civilization. Eventually, he discovered that the giant tribe that had killed his friends had been sworn into the service of the dragon Moltantacious. He joined the defense of Desolace against the giants and dragon.
